It does the basics of a hostel well enough and at a good price, with common extras like a towel or breakfast being available at reasonable prices (though I didn't use them, so can't say much about the quality). Staff were very friendly. The location is fine but not great as it's a bit of a walk relative to both the train station and the city, and there isn't much nearby apart from a corner shop, but there is a bus stop just outside (though the traffic at York meant it was not much faster than walking...). The 4-bed dorm and the ensuite were fairly spacious, though no soap in the shower is a nitpick. Only one extension with 4 sockets tied to a bunk pole for all 4 of us did feel a bit odd, I have to assume the building was not meant to be a hostel and not properly converted. Another sign was the desk and chair, which is nice to have in and of itself, but no socket to use is a big oversight. Comfort was fine though I would say. One "luxury" missing was privacy curtains, so you are at the mercy of your roommates' manners. In terms of facilities, there was also a lounge, quite large kitchen, a pay-to-use laundry, and a bar, though I didn't use any of those so again can't say much.
