It's a shame with how lovely the staff is, but the quality overall seems lacking. Some improvements since the last review, but it seems like they forgot to put any money into actually improving/fixing machines. I don't know if the owner willingly ignores the quality issues with machines, or for some other reason pays no attention and just doesn't allocate money or resources. The bench press assistance arms are still broken on some, the benches themselves move more than they should and are not stable. Both of these wouldn't really be issues at low weights, but when you you're nearing and going past 100, stability starts to become a bit more important. I suppose they're just waiting for someone to injure themselves so they can go "whoops", knowing nobody will challenge them on it. Leg press backrest is loose. Foam on the quad extension roller is almost fully worn. Few quid to fix it? Nah, not with how busy they are. It's so bad you either need to be willing to hurt yourself on it at higher weights, or use shin pads. I'm sure there's more issues around, just haven't bothered to look so closely. Rules are hit and miss. Go topless in the middle of the gym while crowded? Sure. Not frequent but still happens. No real enforcement if at all with putting weights back, or on clothing. No bike signs downstairs are more suggestions. Even the small puregym near the Transport Museum had it in it's budget to place a cleaning station or two with paper towels around, but this was too much for JD with its higher prices and much larger footfall. Got to clean up the sweat and grime of everyone and their mother with your own things.

I usually like JD Gyms, but this branch is really disappointing. There’s a clear lack of gym etiquette among many users. People regularly leave weights lying around instead of putting them back—expecting someone new or less strong to unload multiple 25 kg plates from a barbell or leg press is unreasonable. Dumbbells are often left scattered on the floor near benches, creating obvious trip hazards. If someone were to fall or injure themselves because of this, it could easily lead to legal action. Safety should be taken seriously. If someone is strong enough to lift the weights to use them, there’s no excuse for not racking them properly afterward. I also can’t stand how some people have no respect for personal space or hygiene—including groups of students and Uber drivers who seem more interested in staring at women than actually training. I understand people need to rest between sets, but it’s frustrating when they take 10 minutes just staring at their phones or having long conversations, with no regard for others waiting to use the machine. On top of that, some of the equipment is badly in need of maintenance or replacement. For example, one of the calf raise machines feels like the bearings are shot, and the loading pole on the leg press is so angled it looks like the plates could fall off at any moment. Overall, the entire branch feels neglected and seems to be relying solely on the JD Gyms name to keep attracting members. With so little competition in the area, it feels like there’s no incentive for management to address these issues.
