Building, sleeping within the walls where hundreds made their daily commute to work and back, survived decades of events and the gorgeous grade 2 listed building still stands. Rooms, they were immaculate, clean and well kept. Staff, friendly, helpful and gave a super warm welcome to some very tired folks at the end of their day exploring Durhams heritage. We were given a room in the main building, which by the looks of it was where families are put to stay, we had our little dog who made himself very comfy for the night and we had a great night's sleep. The showers were hot, the service was great and our overall stay was perfect from start to end.

I've stayed in a lot of Travelodge budget hotels. I don't expect a lot but in the case of Travelodge Durham I got much less than usual. First, the welcome. There wasn't one, just two grumpy receptionists for whom I was an inconvenience. My room (106) was huge and the back third was totally empty. Nowhere, absolutely nowhere, to put my suitcase other than open it on the floor. Luckily I was able to find a small table elsewhere in the building which I "borrowed ". The map I found at reception has the town at the very bottom and the hotel itself unmarked and off the edge. Useless and very unhelpful. The hotel should also provide a map of the grounds. My room was hidden away in the rambling hotel grounds and badly signposted. This Travelodge doesn't provide a hot breakfast. It's the only one I've been to like this. Perhaps there is low demand, but providing a decent breakfast should not be a matter of cost-benefit, but of providing a service to guests. The bath needs a non-slip mat. Urgently. Especially as there is a high step up into the bath/shower. A warning sign isn't enough. This Travelodge is designed for car travellers. I walked 1.5km up steep hills to get here from the railway station. It's also a long, steep walk to the nearest shop, a pub or a cafe/restaurant. There is an Italian restaurant on site, but it appears to be permanently shut. Good points: double glazing keeps the heavy traffic noise out.
