The university gym: I'd expect more to be honest. So I'm an athlete at the University and I train regularly at the gym. It is a nice enough gym with an okay range of equipment and a small flexibility area. Flexibility is key to me and my sport so I use the area regularly. In the last year I've had a few issues with inappropriate behaviour and misuse of the flexibility area (usually by men). The staff are 50/50 between absolutely on it and basically being the problem. This includes using the area as a coat rack or place to take calls. Stepping over me mid yoga position. Staff told me to "come at another time" or "try to use the room downstairs, but it has no booking system so it's 50/50 if its free" (Other staff were incredible and have offered to stand in the gym to keep an eye on the issue. Fingers crossed this attitude continues and the new lockers help reduce the misuse) Things seem to improve in the late spring term, but I will be keeping an eye out come September as everyone has the right to work out in peace. Membership is a good price and comes with added bonuses like access to the hall, Badminton, volleyball and climbing. Equipment range is usable and you're never usually waiting too long for equipment. Would be nice to have a full length mirror in the changing rooms for progression pictures as the mirrors in the main gym are in awkward places if you don't want everyone in the photo (GDPR/ Privacy). Changing rooms are a good size, there is water fountains, vending machines, university merchandise (gym clothing) and a lift which is great for accessibility. Their communication with Team Sunderland is lacking, but that could be either side at fault and I hope to help improve this come September as the Social Secretary for a club and supporting Secretary for another. Looking forward to the new £1 lockers as the 20p ones could be temperamental and I always have a £1 on me 😂 All in all you can't complain for the price, but at the same time if they are going to be on uni campus they need to step up and act like they are part of the university with safeguarding and attitudes. It's 2022.
