This gym did improve after changing their layout and is convenient if you need to pop to the shops, but unfortunately I’ve been to over 20 Puregyms around the country as I travel for work, and this is one of the least enjoyable. Firstly, the main issue is that there are simply too many members for the size of the gym - at peak times (in the free weights area particularly), it is absolutely crammed and thus nigh-on impossible to get a regular routine of exercises done. There are also large groups of school-kids that work out all together and hog equipment. The refurb plan could have used the large area in the main room near the pull-up bars for more free weights, which would have helped the cramping. Secondly the hygiene of the changing rooms and showers is consistently an issue, with seemingly permanent mould / bad smells, and showers often being out of order. There was even a whole week where there was a leak and the entire gym was closed, and Puregym gave me no sign of when it would reopen, even though they said they would text. This led to me making a couple of 40 min round trips there for no reason, as I’d been led to believe it would be open - when I DM’ed one of the trainers to ask whether it was back open, as Puregym were of no help, he put on his insta story ‘do not message me about this’, which I found rather unhelpful considering I’m a paying customer. Thirdly, there is a culture of domineering, macho behaviour and shouting in the free weights area which some of the staff turn a blind eye to. I’ve had a couple of really unpleasant interactions with people starting aggressive interactions around sharing equipment, which I’ve not had at all at other gyms. One of the staff also has a tendency to shout very loudly at their clients and give unsolicited comments on form to random customers, which I cannot block out even with noise-cancelling headphones, which doesn’t exactly make for the nicest gym experience. I appreciate that the staff are probably meaning well and we’re mostly all doing our best but I would suggest to go to another Puregym if you can, as most others are leagues above this one!
