St Giles House

First time staying over in Norwich - we've visited before but only while staying in Norfolk. We tried this hotel based on reviews and Booking.com It is in a nice part of town - St Giles - some distance from Cathedral (15 mins), Castle (10 mins) and Station (about 15 mins). But it is a nice neighbourhood with good restaurants. Quite a bit of Norwich is roughish, rogueish, riffish and raffish sadly, as I have found in a lot of English towns. It is a variable feast, but there's plenty to see and do especially if you are young and enjoy smoking pot. The hotel is very grand (common parts) as it was I think an insurance company HQ back in the day. The rooms are OK - large, but bathrooms are rather dated, and towels not fluffy enough for me. The staff are very friendly and helpful indeed. The bar is well-stocked and run. The common parts living room was nice too The breakfast was really nicely done. Overall, it is pricier than some places, but it has charm, character, is welcoming and does much well. I would go back. Some charming photos to help you decide whether to go to Norwich or Not(wich).

Avoid! Save your money / time and avoid this hotel. I booked for 2 nights whilst between house moves, paid extra for a suite which I was initially quite impressed by. Unfortunately it soon became clear the hotel certainly isn't up to its 4 star claim. Very old single glazed windows with no secondary glazing, meaning I could hear normal volume conversations and literally any coughs from passers by even from the 4th floor - St Giles is not a quiet street either. Wi-fi password given during check in, would be great if you could actually connect to the network from the room, which you can't so no wi-fi. Went to take a bath, body wash looked good quality even if screwed to the wall, would have been even better if it wasn't totally empty. Noise was so bad at night I had to drag the mattress through to the lounge area and sleep on the floor, during this process I discovered that under the nice clean bed sheet was a nice urine stain on the mattress / mattress cover! Extractor fan in shower room - broken! Any issues outside of normal working hours in a 4 star hotel just pop down to the front desk right? Wrong, you're given a mobile number on a piece of card in your room to call! Given the front door can be walked through by literally anyone through the night with nobody on the door and no card access required I would say that's a slight concern to have no night duty staff member about. I emailed most of the above concerns to the hotel after my first night and a few weeks later am still to receive any response, not even an apology. I checked out after 1 night and slept on the floor at someone else's house instead, to sum it up when I went to hand my key in at reception it had nobody there. Avoid avoid avoid.
