The South Melbourne Life Saving Club (SMLSC) plays a vital role in providing a fun and engaged community environment and a safer South Melbourne beach, which throughout the summer months, is one of Melbourne’s most popular bay beaches. Together with the Port Melbourne Life Saving Club, the SMLSC patrols a 1.5 km section of beach between the Kerferd Road and Lagoon piers. The current SMLSC building and public amenities are now undergoing redevelopment and a new clubhouse is being built. This will provide a new kiosk, a multipurpose room for community use, accessible public toilets, landscaping and will also improve the safety of the cycle path adjacent to the building. As well as providing greatly enhanced club and public change room/toilet facilities, the new building will incorporate new deck, shade and ways for people to access and enjoy the beach from the footpath and bikepaths, including an all abilities access ramp to the sand. I've seen the concept design and am really excited and can't wait to see the completed redevelopment. I'll have to revisit and update photos then.
